Illustrious Sir Harold "Hal" Haering, PP

July 14th, 1926 - March 10, 2013

Potentate of Moslem Shrine - Detroit, Michigan in 1983

Illus. Sir Harold "Hal" Haering, PP, Brother Hal was born on July 14th, 1926 in Center Line Michigan. Hal attended Wayne State University and played football of the team. Hal later joined the U.S. Navy. At the end of his stint in the Navy, Hal started in business for himself in 1953, and was the founder of "Van Dyke Blueprint Inc." Hal's family consisted of two sons, two daughters and his beloved wife Bea. Hal and Bea were married for 54 years, until her passing in September of 2009 in Masonic Pathways retirement campus.

His membership in Center Line Lodge #550 began on October 28, 1950 when he was raised to the degree of a Master Mason. Hal's father Austin Haering was also a member of Center Line Lodge. Hal's activity in the Masonic Fraternity reached its highest point in 1984 when he received the 33° in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Detroit and in 1977 when Hal joined the Royal Order of Jesters.

Hal Haering will best be remembered as... Illustrious Sir, Hal Haering, past Potentate of Moslem Shriners for the year 1983. Prior to serving as Potentate, Hal was a member of Moslem's Highlanders. One of Hal's dearest friends, namely Herb Campbell would try to teach Hal how to play the bagpipes. The two of them would practice in a parking lot and on more than one occasion people would stop to watch and listen. The marching part was Hal's downfall however, so if you see any old pictures of the Highlanders on parade, you'll find Hal Haering somewhere in the middle. The Shrine Circus was one thing that Hal Haering jumped into with both feet. Serving as Circus Chairman in 1982 and working in the hot dog stand for years before that. While Hal was on the Divan he went on countless trips to find the best acts that were available at that time, and his effort produced some of the finest shows Moslem Shrine Circus ever had. A deep and lasting friendship was formed between Hal and Tommy Hannaford, one of the finest Circus producers of that time. These were truly the golden years for Moslem Temple's Shrine Circuses.

In his later years Hal and Bea would travel all over the world, collecting art and other things of beauty. He is gone and we will miss himBrother Harold "Hal" Haering passed away on March 10th 2013.

He grew up with his brother Everett and his sister Elsie. Immediately upon graduation from high school, in 1943, Dick joined the Army and served his country in World War II. He was injured in France and while recovering from an injury that would have him wearing a leg brace for the rest of his life, Dick served as a chaplain’s assistant, preparing for seminary and life as a pastor.

Over the next 30-plus years, Dick would also serve at City Church in Gary, First United Methodist Church in South Bend, Broadway United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, and Lowell United Methodist Church. He also served as a district superintendent for the Methodist Church and finally as the chaplain at Gary Methodist Hospital.
